


By the late 1990s, the Washington D.C. Public School System
(DCPS) was in crisis. School conditions were extremely poor: facilities in
disrepair, many classrooms with no textbooks, and a lack of quality teaching. Parents
and community members struggled to find any points of access regarding their
children's education. To bridge this information gap, a group of concerned
citizens founded DC VOICE in 1999 to champion the community's need for
objective data about DCPS.
In the last 11 years. DC VOICE has reported on high schools, facilities school
reorganization, special education, and other issues affecting quality education
in the District. We also recognize the diverse makeup of this city and the
importance of including all voices, therefore have published reports in
multiple language
