Site Visits
What makes schools successful, particularly schools that face many challenges?  In an effort to answer this question, DC VOICE and Tellin' Stories Project co-sponsored three more site visits to local DCPS elementary schools this spring. We characterize these high- performing, high-poverty schools as "out-of-the-box" because of their exceptional teaching and learning practices.  Parents, grandparents, teachers and education advocates were able to tour these schools and witness these best teaching and learning methods being enacted.  So much was observed and learned at these site visits. Community action is needed to expand these best practices to reach all of our local schools.

Three schools were chosen as sites for these visits through criteria based on high academic performance and quality programs.  J.O. Wilson Elementary School, Emery Elementary School and Bancroft Elementary School exceed the definition of "out-of-the-box".  So what are the keys for success that have unlocked these "out-of-the-box" schools?  It is clear from our visits that the role of the principal is central to the performance of teachers and students.  All three principals expressed high expectations for their staff and students, and the willingness to go above and beyond to reach those goals.

The importance of communication and collaboration was also seen as a major key to success.  By communicating with staff as well as the community, partnerships are formed and more programs can be offered within schools.  These principals highlighted some extremely valuable partnerships that strengthen the educational values and opportunities at the local school level.  All principals identified their "open door policies" as efforts to build relationships and invite parents to participate in their child's education.

Another key component captured by all site visit participants was the nurturing and welcoming learning environment at each school.  With student work displayed on the walls and data boards exhibited throughout hallways and classrooms, it was evident that such an atmosphere supports educational focus and quality performance.  One participant noticed, "The high quality of instruction is demonstrated in the classrooms and displayed on the walls."  Making our schools more inviting is a method of success that can be practiced in every school by parents, volunteers, and members of the school staff.

DC VOICE and Tellin' Stories Project co-sponsor school site visits each year to celebrate successes and identify and learn from best practices.  Participants are able to research through observation and take action in their own community schools.  Great things are happening at J.O. Wilson, Emery and Bancroft elementary schools!  Through collaborated action these lessons learned can provide the keys to unlock the boxes in all DC pubic schools.
