ADDITIONAL REPORTS

The big District of Columbia Public School (DCPS) school facilities issues right now are the proposed closing of underutilized school buildings and the effects of new grade-level reorganization and consolidations. However, this report focuses on another critical issue - the basic condition of all DCPS school buildings. This special report of the Ready Schools Project analyzes DCPS principals' assessments of the 2007 summer repair program, what was done and how it was managed, and provides some background on the importance of school facilities to teaching and learning as well as the basic condition of DCPS school facilities. Recommendations for continued improvements in our public school buildings are also included.

The Campaign for Good Information is sponsored by several local education advocacy organizations (DC VOICE, ACORN, DC Congress of PTA's Fix Our Schools, Parent Watch and Save Our Schools) to provide information needed before decisions are made, and to ensure that the community is involved in that decision-making. Only through full community participation can we produce decisions that best benefit all public school children, families, and neighborhoods in Washington, D.C. We hope that this guide will assist in informing the questions and decisions of the community.

CGI Questions

Gap Analysis Report

An internal analysis by DC VOICE reveals that 41% of the 44 questions have been answered, thus far, through the community engagement process. A detailed breakdown reflects the greatest attention on reorganization - what schools will be closed and where the students of those schools will be sent. Half of the communities' questions regarding programs were answered while little information was provided on funding for this transition on the implications of these school closings for the massive restructuring process that will occur almost simultaneously.
